Sentences


Ø  There are four kinds of sentences.

1.      Statements

2.      Interrogative sentences

3.     Imperative sentences

4.     Exclamatory sentences


  1. I like watermelons.
  2. I love to paint pictures.
  3. Harry is very happy today.

Ø  A statement says or states something. It begins with a capital letter and ends with a full stop.



  •   INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES.



  1. What is your name?
  2. Did you meet Mr Jemin?
  3. How are you?

Ø  An interrogative sentence or question asks something. It begins with a capital letter and ends with a question mark. Interrogative sentences are those that ask questions and have a question mark at the end.


  1. Are you going to school?
  2. Have you met Harry?
  3. Has he seen your report card?
  4. Is someone knocking at the door?
  5. Will Harry wait at the station?



Ø  We can turn them into questions in the following manner.


1.            I am intelligent.

Ans.       Am I intelligent?

2.            She was sick.

Ans.       Was she sick?

3.            He is late.

Ans.       Is he late?




  • IMPRERATIVE SENTENCE




  1. Switch off the computer.
  2. Please, come to me.
  3. Read the books regularly.

Ø  An imperative sentence requests, commands or gives directions. It usually begins with a verb. It begins with a capital letter and ends with a full stop.






  • EXCLAMATORY SENTENCE






    1. What a beautiful picture it is!
    2. How fast is she running!
    3. What a beautiful park it was!

 

Ø  An exclamatory sentence expresses a strong feeling or emotion. It ends with an exclamation mark.





  • NEGATIVE SENTENCES

 



1.                Harry is very happy.
Negative :- Harry is not very happy.
2.                Reena is ill. 
Negative :- Reena is not ill.
3.                I have some food for the journey. 
Negative :- I have no food for the journey.

 

Ø  A negative sentence is a sentence that has a not or no in it.

Ø  When we don't know the number of things, we use "no" after has/have/had. When we know the number of things, we use "not" after has/have/had


 

POSITION OF  “not”




 

1.   She   is    sad.                                                                       She      is         not     sad.

2.   She    has      money.                                                          She      has          no     money.


Ø  In a sentences where verbs are made of two or more words, we put not after the first word to make the sentence negative. 


She   is          singing.                                                     She       is         not        singing. 


Ø  To make an imperative sentence negative, we put do not or don’t in the beginning of the sentence. 


  Clap you hands.                                                               Don’t clap your hands. 







       1                   The jungle was very dense.
Negative     :-      The jungle was not very dense.
        2                  She has gone to the market.
Negative     :-      She has not gone to the market.
        3                  Play in the garden.
Negative     :-      Do not play in the garden.
         4                 Kanta is talking in class.
Negative     :-      Kanta is not talking in class.
        5                  He has kept his promise.
Negative      :-     He has not kept his promise.
        6                  Jemin is happy with his new friends.
Negative      :-     Jemin is not happy with his new friends.

  


Kinds of Sentences
